The Tatra V570 was a prototype early 1930s car developed by a team led by Hans Ledwinka and Hu. Paul Jaray. The aim of the construction team was to develop a cheap people's car with an aerodynamic body. However the company's management decided that the revolutionary ideas introduced in the prototype should be introduced in large luxurious cars, and therefore the team abandoned the project of small cars in favour of the Tatra T77, the world's first serially produced aerodynamic car. The project of a small car was later continued and led to introduction of the Tatra T97. The second V570 was built in 1933, two years before the first Volkswagen, which bears a strong resemblance to the Tatra - it was misappropriated by Hitler and Dr. Porsche in circumstances about which the German company remains intensely sensitive.  ...  en.wikipedia.org/Tatra_V570

V roce 1924 začala z podnětu Ing. Dr. Františka Kováříka výroba automobilů Wikov, která však trvala jen do roku 1940. Cílem firmy byla malosériová produkce vozů pro bohaté zákazníky. Firma začala experimentovat s prvními prototypy automobilů v roce 1924, ty ale byly vyrobeny jen v počtu několika málo kusů. Za první sériově vyrobené auto firmy Wikov se tak považuje až model Wikov 7/28 z roku 1925. Vzhledem k vysoké ceně vzniklo těchto automobilů nakonec jen 280 kusů. - Následoval technicky ještě dokonaleji provedený model Wikov 35 z roku 1932, jehož výhodou byla velmi dobrá aerodynamika. Ani tento vůz nezaznamenal výrazný prodejní úspěch, a za tři roky se vyrobilo jen 150 kusů. Zajímavostí je, že tento vůz byl již vybaven volantem na levé straně, tak jak to známe dnes, a to i přesto, že strany provozu byly změněny až později. Již ve 30. letech se ale o této změně uvažovalo a firma Wikov se na to připravila.

Na podvozku modelu 35 vznikl vzhledově nejzajímavější vůz továrny Wikov - Kapka, což byl první aerodynamický vůz vyráběný v Československu a jeden z prvních na světě. Za celou dobu se ale vyrobily jen tři kusy (podle některých pramenů až 6). Problém tohoto vzhledově aerodynamického vozu byl v tom, že jeho skutečné aerodynamické vlastnosti nebyly příliš dobré, navíc přidané aerodynamické štíty zvýšily váhu vozu o více jak 100 kg.

The Tatra 87 was a car built by Czechoslovak manufacturer Tatra. It was powered by a rear-mounted 3.0-litre air-cooled 90-degree overhead cam V8 engine that produced 85 horsepower and could drive the car at nearly 100 mph (160 km/h). It is ranked among the fastest production cars of its time. Competing cars in this class, however, used engines with almost twice the volume, and fuel consumption of 20 liters per 100 km (11.8 mpg). Thanks to aerodynamic shape the Tatra 87 had a consumption of just 12.5 litres per 100 km (18.8 mpg). After the war between 1950 and 1953 T87s were fitted with more modern 2.5-litre V8 T603 engines.

The Tatra 87 has a unique bodywork. Its streamlined shape was designed by Hans Ledwinka and Erich Übelacker, and was based on the Tatra 77, the first car designed for aerodynamic purposes. The body design was based on proposals submitted by Paul Jaray of Hungarian descent, who designed the famous German Graf Zeppelin dirigibles. A fin in the sloping rear of the Tatra helps to divide the air pressure on both sides of the car, a technique used in later aircraft. Tatra T87 had a drag coefficient of 0.36 as tested in the VW tunnel in 1979 as well as reading of 0.244 for a 1:5 model tested in 1941.
Small sets of windows in the dividers between the passenger, luggage space and engine compartments, plus louvres providing air for the air-cooled engine, allowed limited rear visibility. Its entire rear segment could be opened, to service the engine. The front doors are "suicide doors" (i.e. rear-hinged doors), whereas the rear doors open in an orthodox manner.
Many design elements of the Tatra 87, Tatra V570 and the later T97 were copied by later car manufacturers. Ferdinand Porsche was heavily influenced by the Tatra 87 and T97and the flat-four-cylinder engine in his design of the Volkswagen Beetle, and was subsequently sued by Tatra.
The price new (in 1940s) was 25,000 SFr. Price today is around $125,000. A 1941 Tatra T87, owned and restored by Paul Greenstein and Dydia DeLyser of Los Angeles California, won a New York Times reader's poll of collector's cars in 2010, beating strong competition from 651 cars.
Examples on display
A T87 is on display in the United States at the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. The museum displays 13 Tatra, including a 613 ambulance. It was this car, used to pick up comedian Jay Leno from the airport, that prompted him to purchase one as well, and become an advocate for the brand.
A 1948-built T87 is exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

Cz. text: Tatra 87 je automobil vyšší třídy vyráběný československou automobilkou Tatrav letech 1937 až 1950. Jde o luxusní aerodynamický automobil, následníka modelu T 77 A. Své kvality prokázala Tatra 87 v letech 1947 – 1950, kdy s tímto vozem stříbrné barvy podnikli Jiří Hanzelka a Miroslav Zikmund cestu do Afrikya Jižní Ameriky. Podle amerického listu The New York Times je sběratelským autem roku 2010, když porazila silnou konkurenci 651 vozů.
V roce 1936 byly vyrobeny první dva prototypy T 87 pro zkoušky a v roce 1937 dalších pět vozů ověřovací série. Tatra 87 byla oficiálně představena v roce 1937. Od roku 1938 se již T 87 vyráběla sériově. V roce 1940 byly vyrobeny i dva kabriolety pro případné použití v armádě. Po válce pokračovala sériová výroba T 87 s drobnými změnami na karoserii až do roku 1950. V roce 1948 byla zmodernizována přední část karoserie, do většího vyklenutí v blatnících byly zapuštěny světlomety až po úroveň krycího skla. Vozy dostaly nové nárazníky, které s karosérií tvořily kompaktnější celek. Standardně měl tento model i odsouvací díl střechy nad předními sedadly. V této úpravě se vůz dodával až do roku 1950 a to pouze pro potřebu státních a stranických orgánů...

The Czechoslovakian Tatra 77 (T77) is the first serial-produced truly aerodynamically designed automobile. It was developed by Hans Ledwinkaand Paul Jaray, the Zeppelin aerodynamic engineer. Launched in 1934, the Tatra 77 is a coach-built automobile constructed on a central tube-steel chassis and is powered by a 75 horsepower (56 kW) rear-mounted 3.4-liter air-cooled V8 engine. It possessed advanced engineering applications such as overhead valves, hemispherical combustion chambers, dry sump, fully independent suspension, rear swing axles and extensive use of lightweight magnesium-alloy for the engine, transmission, suspension and body. The average drag coefficient of a 1:5 model of Tatra 77 was recorded as 0.2455. The later model T77a has a top speed of over 150 km/h (93 mph) due to its advanced aerodynamics design which delivers an exceptionally low drag coefficient of 0.212, although some sources claim that this is the coefficient of a 1:5 scale model, not of the car itself.
History: The Tatra Company began manufacturing cars in 1897 in Kopřivnice, Moravia, today's Czech republic, making it the third oldest still existing automobile manufacturer in the world. Under the direction of Hans Ledwinka, the company employed many genius minds of automotive history, including Erich Übelacker and consultant Paul Jaray, who all designed the Tatra 77.

Paul Jaray and Tatra V570: Paul Jaray first worked at Luftschiffbau Zeppelin (LZ) where he gained experience with aerodynamic design of airships. He used his access to LZ's wind tunnels and subsequently established the streamlining principles for car design. In 1927 he founded a company specializing in developing streamlined car bodies and selling issuing licenses to major vehicle manufacturers. Tatra was the only manufacturer to incorporate Jaray streamline principles into their series car production, starting with the Tatra 77.
Before designing the large luxurious T77, Jaray designed an aerodynamic body for the Tatra 57, a mid-range model. This prototype was not further developed and failed to reach production. Instead, Jaray constructed two prototypes for a concept designated as the Tatra V570, which more closely conformed to his aerodynamic streamlining principles, featuring a beetle-shaped body

Project 570
In 1932 Tatra engaged Paul Jaray as a design consultant on their new Tatra 57 project. Jaray presented a radically streamlined design for a mid-sized sedan. A single prototype was built but Tatra felt it was too unorthodox and handed the project over to Ledwinka's son Erich and designer Erich Uberlacher.

However, at the time Tatra already had a cheap well selling car in its production range, which was moreover popular due to its continuation of simple and ultra-reliable tradition started by model Tatra 11. Although the management saw the advantages of Jaray's concept, they believed that the new model will be only an additional model with limited production, which meant that it should be aimed at the top of automobile market. The Ledwinka's team subsequently stopped work on V570 and concentrated on designing large luxurious cars. Tatra aimed at making state-of-the-art cars that would be fast, stable, nearly silent, economical and built to the most rigorous engineering standards, as well as reflect modern aerodynamic research.
Public response:
Hans Ledwinka was the chief-designer responsible for the development of the new car, while Erich Übelacker was responsible for the body. The development was very secretive until the last moments of the official presentation on March 5, 1934 at Prague Tatra offices. The car was demonstrated on the road from Prague to Karlovy Vary, where it easily reached 145 kilometres per hour (90 mph) and amazed newspapermen with great handling and comfortable ride at speeds of about 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph). That same year the T77 was presented at the Paris motorshow, where it became the center of attention not only due to its atypism, but also due to its performance. There were even demonstration rides after the ability of the car to reach 140 kilometres per hour (87 mph) with a mere 45 kilowatts (60 hp) of engine power to reach was doubted, as normally at the time for a car to reach such a speed required about twice as much horsepower. Director Maurice Elvey was so amazed by the looks of the car that he used the T77a in his science-fiction movie The Transatlantic Tunnel.

The Tatra 77 was the particular favourite of Tatra design engineer Erich Übelacker, who owned and used a T77 himself since 1934. Other famous owners of T77s were Milos Havel, the proprietor of the film studios in Praguewho bought a T77 in 1935, Austrian car designer Edmund Rumpler, who designed the aerodynamic Rumpler Tropfenwagen in 1921, Edvard Beneš, the 1930s minister of Foreign Affairs and later president of Czechoslovakia, who both owned a T77a.

The design sketch of the T77 includes some of Paul Jaray's typical features, such as the sharply rounded windscreen and boat-tailed cabin. However, moving the engine to the rear allowed the passenger cabin to move forward between the axles. This in turn lowered the car's profile and improved handling and stability.
Despite the problems Tatra made a brave decision to continue with the rear-engined, streamliner project, but recast as a luxury car. Increasing the wheelbase and size of the vehicle allowed the team to address many of the issues that had plagued the smaller, budget car as it provided a more stable platform for the rear engine and allowed the maximum streamlining to be achieved. The vehicle's drag co-efficient of 0.212 was outstandingly efficient and has rarely been achieved in modern production vehicles.
The car's new 3.4 litre, air-cooled v8 engine was mounted far in the rear and delivered 75 horsepower. Air scoops were mounted in the rear bodywork to ensure a stream of cooling air was directed across the engine. Performance in trials was excellent and the car could maintain speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour.

The Tatra 77 prototype is easily recognisable by its split front windscreen. Later examples had a wrap around windscreen with two small side windows. Numerous changes were made to each subsequent vehicle as the design evolved.
The Tatra T77 had been developed and built in secret so when the car was finally unveiled at the Prague Auto Show on 3 May 1934, it created a sensation. Exhibitions followed at the Paris and Berlin auto shows and journalists were lavish in their praise of the extraordinary car, both for its futuristic design as well as its outstanding performance. All commented on the car's speed and smooth handling and the orders started to flow.

De. text: Der Tatra 57 war der Nachfolger des Kleinwagens Typ 12, den der tschechoslowakische Hersteller Tatra 1932 vorstellte. Das Fahrzeug hatte einen als Boxermotor bezeichneten obengesteuertengebläsegekühlten Vierzylinder-V-Motor mit 180° Gabelwinkel  und 1155 cm³ Hubraum und 18 PS (13,2 kW) Leistung. Der Frontmotor trieb über eine Einscheiben-Trockenkupplung und ein unsynchronisiertes Vierganggetriebe mit Mittelschaltung die Hinterräder an. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit des 780 kg schweren Wagens lag bei 80 km/h. Das Fahrgestell war ein Zentralrohr, die Vorderräder waren an zwei Querblattfedern aufgehängt, die hinteren an einer gelenklosen Pendelachse mit einer Querblattfeder. „Gelenklos“ waren die Antriebswellen – jede Antriebswelle war starr mit einem Tellerrad verbunden, das sich beim Einfedern auf seinem Antriebsritzel abwälzte. Hans Ledwinka (14 February 1878 – 2 March 1967) was an Austrianautomobile designer.
Youth Ledwinka was born in Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria), near Vienna, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
He started his career as simple mechanic, and later studied in Vienna. As a young man he worked for Nesselsdorfer-Wagenbau in Nesselsdorf, the company that later became known as Tatra in Moravia. He was first employed in the construction of railroad cars, and later involved in the production of the first cars produced by this firm. He designed the 5.3-litre six-cylinder Type U motor car. In 1917, in the midst of World War I, he left the company to join Steyr.
Chief designer at Tatra
Ledwinka returned to Tatra company (originally Nesselsdorfer-Wagenbau) in Kopřivnice (Nesselsdorf), then in Czechoslovakia, now in Czech Republic, and between 1921 and 1937 he was their chief design engineer. He invented the frameless central tubular chassis (so-called "backbone chassis") with swing axles, fully independent suspension and rear-mounted air-cooled flat engine. Another of Ledwinka's major contributions to automobile design was the development of the streamlined car body. Under him, Tatra brought to market the first streamlined cars that had been mass-produced. Together with his son Erich, who took over as chief designer at Tatra, Ledwinka and Erich Übelacker, a German engineer also employed by Tatra, designed the streamlined Tatra models T77, T77a, T87, and T97. All of these models had rear mounted, air-cooled engines.
Volkswagen controversy
Both Hitler and Porsche were influenced by the Tatras. Hitler was a keen automotive enthusiast, and had ridden in Tatras during political tours of Czechoslovakia. He had also dined numerous times with Hans Ledwinka. After one of these dinners Hitler remarked to Porsche, "This is the car for my roads". while the book Car Wars, quotes Hitler as saying it was "the kind of car I want for my highways". In any case, of Ledwinka, Porsche admitted "Well, sometimes I looked over his shoulder and sometimes he looked over mine" while designing the Volkswagen. There is no doubt that the Beetle bore a striking resemblance to the earlier Tatra. Tatra launched a lawsuit, but this was stopped when Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. At the same time, Tatra was forced to stop producing the T97. The matter was re-opened after World War II and in 1965 Volkswagen paid Ringhoffer-Tatra 1,000,000 Deutsche Marks in an out of court settlement.
Final years
After the Second World War, Ledwinka was accused of collaboration with the German occupation forces and jailed for five years in Czechoslovakia. After his release in 1951, he refused to work for Tatra, and retired to Munich, Germany where he died in 1967.
The legacy
In 2007 Hans Ledwinka was inducted in the European Automotive Hall of Fame.
Ledwinka's son Erich, was also a car designer. He designed the unique Haflinger for Steyr-Daimler-Puch, as well as the larger Pinzgauer High Mobility All-Terrain Vehicle. Both utilize tubular chassis and swing portal axles. ...

The T77 however was very much an experimental car and its handling could be a little unpredictable. Drivers had to be extremely careful however that the car did not become unbalanced and flip off the road. Instability at speed required changes to the large and distinctive vertical tail-fin to prevent the car yawing at speed. The design team continued to work through these issues and made adjustments to almost every element of the car, which meant that no two T77s or the later T77a were exactly the same. Az üzem fő termékei sörfőzdei és cukorgyári berendezések voltak, de emellett még vasúti személy- és teherkocsikat, továbbá szerkocsikat, motorvonatokat és villamosokat is gyártottak. 1946. március 7-én céget már összhangban az 1945. október 24-i elnöki rendelettel államosították. In 1936 Tatra released the new T87 model, which brought together the lessons from the experimental T77 and T77A. The T87 saw the car's headlights moved from the bonnet to the wheel arches. An additional third headlight was mounted in the bonnet. This headlight rotated with the front wheels to light the way around corners. The car also received an improved 2.9 litre V8 engine that delivered 85 horsepower. Lightweight magnesium alloy was used in the engine to reduce the weight. As the car could easily cruise at over 160kph it was a popular seller, especially in Germany where it was purchased by such automotive and military luminaries as Ernst Heinkel and Erwin Rommel. En. text: The Tatra T.101 is a two-seat monoplane general aviation aircraft that was built in 1937 by Tatra. Only a single aircraft was built, but it set several records in the hands of Jan Ambrus. A géppel több csehszlovák rekordot állítottak fel. 1938-ban Ján Ambruš géppel a Prága-Ruzyně repülőtérről 4330 km-t megtéve a szudáni Kartúmig repült. Hu. text: A Magas-Tátra (szlovákul Vysoké Tatry, lengyelül Tatry Wysokie, németül: Hohe Tatra) a Kárpátok legmagasabb hegyvonulata, s egyben a világ legkisebb magashegysége a Tátra keleti részén, Szlovákia és Lengyelország határán. Egész területe a lengyel és szlovák Tátrai Nemzeti Parkok védett övezetében található. A hegység látogatását a nemzeti parkok látogatási rendje szabályozza. Vannak területei, melyek teljes védelem alatt állnak, s a turisták elől teljesen elzártak.
A szlovákiai Tátra-aljai terület két fő régióra oszlik – Szepesi és Liptói –, ezekben sok természeti és turisztikai látványosság található, amelyek a Magas-Tátrához közvetlenül vagy közvetve kötődnek.

Megfelelő időjárási körülmények mellett legmagasabb részei Magyarországrólis láthatók, különösen az Északi-középhegység, a Pilis vagy a Budai-hegységegyes magasabb pontjairól (például Nagy-Kopasz, Dobogó-kő, Galya-tető). Eltéveszthetetlenek, mert hegyes, hófedte hegycsúcsok alkotják.

Blogger Remember: I had work with Hu. helicopter maintenance team at Poprad IAP ATE hangar in november of 2015.  during two weeks. I had repainting the helicopters with slovakian professional heli mechanics & painter collegaues: Miroslav and Lucas, they were very friendly. It was very nice and useful and beautiful panorama.

After He duration one week layed in Kesmarok hospital than end from  Ambu trspt. to Poprad IAP ( IATA code TAT, and ICAO code LZTT ) after Take Off was p.m. before sunset it was beautiful view to Tatra and air Transport route to 'Ferihegy' IAP but VMC was under minimal in night, after capt. Col. make Low Pass flu to Bratislva Airport, my Father picked up into Slovak Police Hospital, I gone with my Mother "Veronika" travelled to Budapest with CSD train during the night. (photo will be as son as after scan) - Az első motoros repülő élményem ide kötődik Poprádhoz, mikor egy 2 hetes üdülés közben Édesapám (Rendőrtiszt) lábtöréssel súlyosan megsérült a síelésben és haza kellett volna szállítani de Ferihegy nem fogadta a Szlovák BM gépét így Pozsonyban szálltunk le és édesanyámmal vonattal utaztunk haza Bp-re. A repülés csodálatos volt a délutáni naplementés tiszta időben felszállással.

Cz. text: Ing. Jiří Hanzelka (24. prosince 1920 Štramberk – 15. února 2003 Praha) byl českýcestovatel a spisovatel Narodil se na kopci Kotouč u Štramberka v domě, který patřil správě vápencových lomů. Ve věku tří let se s rodiči přestěhoval do Kopřivnice kde jeho otec pracoval v automobilce Tatra jako dělník ve vývojovém oddělení; příležitostně také závodil jako spolujezdec Josefa Vermiřovského. V letech 1925až 1930 bydleli v Bratislavě, poté se přestěhovali do Prahy.
Vystudoval obchodní akademii a po maturitě (1938) začal studovat Vysokou obchodní školu. Protože ale na začátku druhé světové války došlo k uzavření českých vysokých škol, mohl ji ukončit až v r. 1946. Mezitím byl nasazen na zemědělské práce do Zhoře u Tábora kde při úrazu na statku přišel o prst. Na škole studoval s Miroslavem Zikmundem, který byl jeho partnerem na cestách i spoluautorem jejich knih.
V letech 1947 až 1950 podnikl spolu s M. Zikmundem cestu do Afriky a Jižní Ameriky. Celou tuto výpravu absolvovali společně ve voze značky Tatra T 87.
Po návratu do Československa se roku 1954 oženil a později se mu narodily dvě děti, syn Jiří a dcera Hana. Roku 1958věnoval svůj dům v Gottwaldově tomuto městu s podmínkou, že v něm budou zřízeny dětské jesle.
Druhou cestu, již s doprovodem, podnikli ve dvou vozech Tatra 805 v letech 1959 až 1964. Při této výpravě projeli Asii a Oceánii. Také na této cestě shromáždili velké množství dokumentárního materiálu. Krátce po návratu zemřela na rakovinujeho žena. Jako přesvědčený sociální demokrat a v naději, že komunistické straně se může zdařit reforma politického systému, roku 1963 vstoupil do KSČ. Jako člen KSČ i v roce 1968 stál na straně tzv. reformních komunistů, účastnil se aktivně protestních akcí na podporu Pražského jara a stal se jednou ze známých symbolických postav tohoto protestu. Proto mu bylo v roce 1969 znemožněno dále publikovat a účastnit se veřejného života. Po dlouhou dobu nesměl J. Hanzelka ani dostat oficiální zaměstnání, tím spíše, že v roce 1977 podepsal Chartu 77. První zaměstnání dostal až roku 1983 kdy začal jako sadař v podniku Sady lesy zahradnictví prořezávat stromy v pražské Seminářské zahradě. O čtyři roky později se přestěhoval do Sedla u Jindřichova Hradce. Jiří Hanzelka je pohřben na hřbitově sv. Jiljí u Domanína.

Cz. text: Miroslav Zikmund (* 14. února 1919 v Plzni) je český cestovatel a spisovatel.
Životopis
Po maturitě (1938) začal studovat Vysokou obchodní školu. Protože na počátku druhé světové války došlo k uzavření českých vysokých škol, mohl ji ukončit až v r. 1946. Na škole studoval s Jiřím Hanzelkou, který byl jeho partnerem na cestách i spoluautorem jejich knih.
V letech 1947 – 1950 podnikl spolu s J. Hanzelkou cestu do Afriky a Jižní Ameriky. Celou tuto výpravu absolvovali společně vozem Tatra 87. Z této cesty bylo rozhlasem odvysíláno přes 700 reportáží. Na této cestě udělali velké množství fotografií a natočili množství filmového materiálu, jehož dokumentární cena je značná.
V roce 1953 se oženil s operní pěvkyní a sólistkou Národního divadla Evou Zikmundovou, se kterou má syna Miroslava.
Druhou cestu, již s doprovodem, podnikli ve dvou upravených nákladních vozech Tatra 805 v letech 1959 – 1964. Při této výpravě projeli Asii a Oceánii. Také na této cestě shromáždili velké množství dokumentárního materiálu.
V roce 1968 se postavil na stranu tzv. „reformních komunistů“, proto mu bylo v roce 1969 znemožněno dále publikovat a účastnit se veřejného života. Již dlouhou dobu žije ve Zlíně a v roce 2014 mu byl udělen čestný doktorát Univerzity Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně. V témže roce dne 28. října mu český prezident Miloš Zeman udělil Řád Tomáše Garrigua Masaryka I. třídy.
Dílo
Celé dílo je napsáno společně s J. Hanzelkou (oba autoři si dokonce rovným dílem dělili i všechny honoráře) a týká se výhradně jejich cest. Cestám je věnována také stálá expozice v Muzeu jihovýchodní Moravy ve zlínském zámku S inženýry Hanzelkou a Zikmundem pěti světadíly, otevřená 30. listopadu 1996.

En. text: Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth a.s. is a Czech manufacturer and one of the world's largest producers and distributors of art supplies, writing equipment and stationery. It was founded in 1790 by Joseph Hardtmuth of Austria. In 1802, the company patented the first pencil lead made from a combination of kaolin and graphite. In 1848, Joseph's sons, Karl and Ludwig, took over the family business, and the production was relocated to the Bohemian town of Budweis, which belongs now to the Czech Republic. The products were given awards in many world exhibitions, including in 1855 in New York City, 1856, 1900 and 1925 in Paris, 1862 in London, 1882 in Vienna and 1905 in Milan.

Leben
Nach dem Abitur 1938 begann Miroslav Zikmund ein Ingenieursstudium an der Wirtschaftshochschule (Vysoké škole obchodní) in Prag. Da die Hochschulen während des Zweiten Weltkrieges geschlossen waren, konnte er sein Studium erst 1946 beenden. An der Hochschule lernte er seinen späteren Mitreisenden und Mitautor Jiří Hanzelka kennen.
Von 1947 bis 1950 unternahmen Miroslav Zikmund und Jiří Hanzelka in einem Tatra 87 eine Reise durch Afrika, Südamerikaund Mittelamerika. Über diese Reise wurden über siebenhundert Rundfunkreportagen ausgestrahlt. Hinzu kamen Tausende von Fotos und eine große Menge Filmmaterial.
Ihre zweite große, von 1959 bis 1964 dauernde Reise unternahmen Hanzelka und Zikmund, „H + Z“, wie sie inzwischen allgemein genannt wurden, wieder mit Unterstützung der Tatra-Werke, diesmal mit zwei für die Expedition umgerüsteten Armeetransportern der Baureihe Tatra 805. Sie durchquerten Asien und Ozeanien.
1968 stellte sich Zikmund auf die Seite der Reformkommunisten. Nach der Niederschlagung des Prager Frühlings wurde ihm 1970 verboten, weitere Bücher zu publizieren. Zikmund und Hanzelka mussten sich als Heizer und Gärtner durchschlagen.
Seit 1953 lebt Zikmund in Zlín. Im Südostmähren-Museum in seiner Wahlheimat Zlín ist den Reisen Zikmunds und Hanzelkas eine Dauerausstellung gewidmet. Ihre Fotografien werden häufig in länderbezogenen Ausstellungen gezeigt. Zikmund ist Mitglied des tschechischen Schriftstellerverbandes Obec spisovatelů.

Eva Herzigová (born 10 March 1973) is a Czech model and actress. 
Early life and career:
Herzigová was born in Litvínov, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). She began her modeling career after winning a modeling beauty contest in Praguein 1989, at the age of sixteen. She was a member of Thomas Zeumer's Metropolitan Models. After arriving in Paris, her popularity increased. Her first important appearance was as the model for the first Wonderbra campaign. In 1994, advertising executive Trevor Beattie, working for TBWA/London, developed an ad for Sara Lee's "Hello Boys" Wonderbracampaign. It featured a close-up image of Herzigová wearing a black Wonderbra. The ad used only two words: "Hello boys." The campaign was considered ground-breaking and controversial, resulting in complaints that the photograph demeaned women. The influential poster was featured in an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and it was voted in at number 10 in a "Poster of the Century" contest. The Canada-based lingerie fashion label wanted the ad campaign to motivate women to see the Wonderbra "as a cosmetic and as a beauty enhancer rather than a functional garment". The billboard was voted in 2011 as the most iconic outdoor ad during the past five decades by the Outdoor Media Centre. She was also featured in Guess? jeans campaigns, the Victoria's Secret catalog and Sports Illustrated. Herzigová has featured in a variety of international fashion magazines, gracing the covers of Vogue (France, Britain, Spain, Germany, Japan, Australia, Mexico, Turkey, Thailand), Harper's Bazaar (Britain, Spain, Ukraine, Italy, Australia) as well as Elle, Marie Claire, Numéro and Allure. She has also walked for designers including Louis Vuitton, Giles Deacon, Emilio Pucciand Versace. Amongst her most recent projects, Herzigová also starred in a fashion art film by Imagine Fashion, called Decadent Controlwith Roberto Cavalli. It featured fashions by Agent Provocateur and H&M. In the August 2004, Herzigová posed for the centerfold of Playboy . In 2006, she portrayed Venus at the 2006 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. In 2016, Herzigová featured in campaigns for Giorgio Armani and Dior Beauty.
Personal life:
Herzigová married Tico Torres, the drummer from Bon Jovi, in September 1996. The couple divorced in June 1998. Herzigová is currently in a relationship with Gregorio Marsiaj, with whom she has three sons: George (born 1 June 2007 in Turin), Philipe (born 13 March 2011) and Edward (born April 2013). In 2003, Herzigová sued Canadian retailer La Senza for $36,000 for a breach of contract. above: HiRes! A pre-war and post-war T87 side by side. The post-war model on the right has bigger and more bulbous bonnet and wheel arches. Internally, the fittings were a little less extravagant. Most surviving T87s are in fact post-war manufactured even though they may contain pre-war parts.
Post-War
After the end of the Second World War Czechoslovakia found itself within the Soviet sphere of influence. The Soviets treated the management of Czechoslovakian companies such as Tatra and Skoda very harshly. Hans Ledwinka was arrested, charged with collaboration and sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour. When he was released in 1951 Tatra were keen to regain his services, offering him the managing directorship, but he refused and retired to Munich, Germany, where he lived quietly until his death in 1967.
Like the Nazis, the Communists weren't particularly interested in Tatra's cars but very interested in their trucks so truck production was prioritised. Car production did however recommence surprisingly quickly with small numbers of both the T75s and T87s rolling off the production line, mainly built out of stocks of pre-war parts.   Heinkelscooter

With Ledwinka in his prison, a new design team took over at Tatra. In 1946 they initiated a project to design a new car to replace the T57 and T87, however, the project was immediately hamstrung by the loss of machinery, parts and skilled engineers. It quickly became apparent that a new car design would take four or five years to come to fruition. Tatra couldn't afford to wait that long and decided to rehash the prewar T97. Josef Chalupa, Vladimír Popelář, and František Kardaus simplified almost all elements of Hans Ledwinka's T97 to make it easier and cheaper to manufacture. The new car was powered by a flat four boxer engine of 1921cc capacity. Many of the body panels were hand beaten as industrial presses were not available.   Heinkelscooter

In 1936 Tatra attempted to re-enter the 'budget' vehicle market with the streamlined T97. The T97 was basically a shrunk down T87 powered by a 1761cc rear-mounted flat four boxer engine. Certain other features were simplified, such as reverting a dual headlights and a single piece windscreen. Although the engine was only 40 horsepower, the T97 was a very sleek machine and could easily cruise at 130kph. Only 508 examples were built before production was bought to an abrupt halt when Germany invaded and annexed Czechoslovakia in 1938. The Tatraplan was definitely an elite car, reserved for Party and industry officials and the export market. but after a little over a year's production, the Central Planning Committee transferred Tatra's car manufacturing to the Skoda works in order to allow Tatra to focus on trucks. This decision was unpopular with both Tatra and Skoda. En. text: Rail motor coach class M 290.0 (manufactured as Tatra 68), named after an express train which it served as Slovenská strela was manufactured by Tatra Kopřivnice in 1936 for Czechoslovak State Railways.
Only two units were manufactured and were used on newly introduced express train Slovenská strela starting in 1936. They covered the distance in 4 hours and 28 minutes with a maximum speed of 130 km/h. Both were taken out of service when World War II started in 1939. Afterwards, they were only occasionally deployed on local routes.
The M 290.001 was taken out of service in 1953, the M290.002 in 1960. The M 290.002 is now on display in the company museum of Tatra (company) in Kopřivnice. The M 290.001 did not survive.

Buckminster Fuller is remembered as the inventor of the geodesic dome, but he also invented a unique automobile, called the Dymaxion Car. The Dymaxion was a three wheeler, with the rear wheel doing the steering. Because of the rear wheel steering, it could do a U turn in its own length. Unfortunately, its length was 20 feet. It was a real torpedo of a car, seating 11 people, and capable of doing 120 miles per hour on the freeway. It weighed less than 1000 pounds, and got 30-50 mpg. Invented in 1933, it was completely revolutionary. I have a personal connection with the Dymaxion car, as Fuller lived in Wichita Kansas when he built it, where my uncle lived. Cz. text: Let L-200 Morava je československý dvoumotorový víceúčelový letoun, který je pro svou oblíbenost a kvalitu v současnosti využíván zejména pro vyhlídkové lety. Vývoj letounu L-200, který se měl stát novým aerotaxíkem, začal v továrně národní podnik Strojírny první pětiletky v Kunovicích, později národní podnik Let Kunovice roku 1955. Výsledkem konstrukční kanceláře byl zdařilý pětimístný kovový dolnoplošník. První let prototypu XL-200 (výr. č. XL-001, OK-LNA) uskutečnil Ladislav Šváb 9. dubna1957. Podnikové zkoušky proběhly od 15. května 1957 do 6. prosince 1957 v Kunovicích a od 24. ledna 1958 do 31. ledna 1958 v Letňanech. Druhým létajícím prototypem byl letoun L-200 výr. č. XL-03 s imatrikulací OK-LNB. Při letových zkouškách se ukázalo, že řadové šestiválcové motory Walter Minor 6-III o výkonu 118 kW s vrtulemi V-402 nejsou dost výkonné.

History
After World War II, Tatra continued its pre-war business of building passenger cars in addition to commercial vehicles and military vehicles. The factory was nationalised in 1946 two years before the Communist takeover. Although production of pre-war models continued, a new model, the Tatra 600 Tatraplan was designed in 1946-47 by Josef  Chalupa, Vladimír Popelář, František Kardaus and Hans Ledwinka. The name of the car celebrated the new Communist planned economy but also referred to aeroplane inspiration ('éroplan' means aeroplane in colloquial Czech).
After two prototypes "Ambrož" (December 1946) and "Josef" (March 1947), the 600 went into mass production in 1948. In 1951, the state planning department decided that the Tatraplan should henceforth be built at the Skoda Auto plant in Mladá Boleslav, leaving Tatra to concentrate on truck assembly. This was quite unpopular with the workforce at both plants: as a result Skoda built Tatraplans for one year only before the model was discontinued in 1952.
The Tatraplan had a monocoque streamlined 6-seat fastback saloon body with frontal suicide doors and a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.32. It was powered by an air-cooled flat-4-cylinder 1,952 cc rear-mounted engine. 6,342 were made, 2,100 of them in Mladá Boleslav. In 2010, in the UK, Tatraplan had been selected by public vote in the 'Classic Car of the Year' competition as the winner of the 1940s category.

Following the demise of its automobile line Tatra focused on heavy truck production. Tatra's independent suspension, multi-axle drive trucks were extremely popular with the Soviets and were used for both military and heavy industrial purposes. They were even used as nuclear missile transporters. The Tatra design team however were less than impressed with this decision and continued to work on car designs in secret. The result was the Vatula, a car no less space age in 1954 than the T77 had been in 1934.

The Central Planning Committee quickly came to regret their decision to stop production of the Tatraplan as the Russian Zil's proved to be disappointing; deliveries were sporadic and the cars poorly built. Tatra saw their opportunity and jumped on it, revealing the Vatula as a fully realised design. The Planning Committee were impressed and gave them the go ahead for the production of a streamlined luxury car. 

Released in 1955, the T603 was powered by a 2.5 litre V8 engine. The cars were all hand built and luxuriously fitted. Despite the contemporary advertising above, the cars were manufactured exclusively for use by party officials and foreign export. Some 20,000 T603s were built between 1955 and 1975 when the car was replaced by the boxy T613. Almost one third of the T603s were exported, primarily to other Eastern Bloc countries but there was a small export market to the west, especially France and Germany. A small number also ended up in western hands when they were sold off by diplomatic and consular offices around the world at the end of their official life.  Heinkelscooter

The Tatra 603 is a large rear-engined luxury car which was produced by the Czechoslovak company Tatra from 1956 to 1975. It was a continuation of the series of Tatra streamlined sedans started by the Tatra 77. In Communist Czechoslovakia only high-ranking party officials and heads of factories were driven in 603s; the car was also exported to a number of other countries.
History:
Tatra was the traditional maker of state-of-the-art luxurious automobiles in the Czech lands. Austro-Hungarian emperor Charles I used a NW type T; the Czechoslovak president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk drove the twelve-cylinder Tatra 80 while his successor Edvard Beneš drove the streamlined Tatra 87. While the T87 was manufactured from 1936 to 1950, the post-war T600 may be considered the first car of the new political establishment. The T600 was much smaller and used an engine of only four cylinders, making it the descendant of the T97, the small pre-war Tatra. Production of the T97 had been stopped by the Nazis in order to cover its resemblance to their KdF-Wagen (which later became known as the VW Beetle). Czechoslovakia had a Communist government since 1948, and its economy was later subject to some regulation by the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON), consisting of eastern European Communist nations. After production of the T600 ended in 1952, COMECON decided that Tatra would manufacture only trucks, while luxury cars would be imported into Czechoslovakia from the USSR.
The enthusiastic Tatra designers, however, continued their work on a new car in secret. In 1952 a group of designers led by František Kardaus and Vladimír Popelář started secret development of a new car called Valuta, while officially devoting their time to development of a new three-axle bus T400. In 1953 the communist government got fed up with delays in delivery of Soviet cars as well as with their poor quality and they ordered development of a new luxury Tatra, thus giving legitimacy to the team's previous work. The new car was to have a 3.5-litre air-cooled eight-cylinder engine, and it was to be ready for production by the end of 1954. While the chassis was almost ready due to the work on Valuta, the engine remained an issue. Even in their secret designs nobody had anticipated such a large engine. Engineer Julius Mackerle proposed a "temporary" solution of using the already developed 2.5-litre T603 engine in the new car (it was already successfully used in Tatra racecars and Tatra 87-603), while the larger one was supposed to be ready in the next 4–5 years.
The first driveable T603 was finished in 1955. A number of body designs were tested in wind-tunnels. In the end the one proposed by František Kardas and fine-tuned by Vladimír Popelář and Josef Chalupa was chosen for production.
Three versions of the model T603 were manufactured successively between 1956 and 1975. These cars are designated T603, T 2-603 and T 3-603, though the 3- was not an official designation used by Tatra.
The T603-1 is easily distinguished by its three headlamps enclosed beneath a clear glass cover.
In 1962 the 2-603 was launched. Four headlamps were mounted within a long oval grille and the dashboard was changed. The rear track was increased by 55 mm and the engine was modernized.
In 1966 the car got power brakes, while in 1967 other changes were added: for example the windshield's height was enlarged by 66 mm.
The unofficial -3 (or Tatra 2-603 II) omits the grille and places the headlamps flush with the car's front fascia. The car got disk brakes on all four wheels and was officially changed to a five-seater for legal reasons (from 1968 the safety belts became obligatory for passengers on front seats).
In 1973 the T603 became the first Czechoslovak car with contactless thyristor ignition.
To complicate matters, as model T603s were returned to the factory to be exchanged for "new" model T603s, the older cars would be disassembled and rebuilt to the current styling. These cars were then returned to use as "new" T603's. As a result, most T603s are of the later -3 styling, regardless of their original production date.
Official use:
The Model T603 was allocated only to senior members of the political and industrial establishments. About a third of T603 production was exported to most of the central and eastern European countries allied to Czechoslovakia at the time, as well as to Cuba and China. Sales to private individuals were not normally possible, although a few T603s appear to have been privately owned in East Germany. During the car's twenty-year production run, 20,422 cars were built, mostly by hand. To the west of the Iron Curtain the car was mostly unknown, though some were used by Czechoslovak embassies in western capitals. The model T603 was replaced by the T613 in 1974.
Former Cuban President Fidel Castro is believed still to have owned a white T603 featuring air conditioning.
Originally the Comecon issued a provision limiting Czechoslovakia to production of no more than 300 luxurious cars per year. Tatra was making more of them, though. This became an issue in 1957 and 1958, especially considering that East Germany produced its own luxurious car, the Sachsenring P240. The Comecon decided that the two countries must reach a deal to choose which country would continue production to supply the other. In 1958 the Ministries of Interior of both countries took part in trials, which East Germany's Minister of Machinery personally attended. The 603 won, and subsequently East Germany's higher communist officials got to drive the T603, while the lower ones had to drive imports from USSR.
Design:
The first model of 603 was characterized by three headlamps; the central one was linked to the steering, making it possible to turn this lamp with steering (feature already used on T77a in 1934). Originally the three headlights were under a single piece of glass, but later three-piece glass was used. There was a large luggage compartment under the front bonnet, under which was the spare wheel. The spare wheel was in a separate container which could be opened from underneath, thus making it possible to reach it without taking out luggage. Initially the windshield was made from two pieces of glass, but soon a single glass sheet was used. The interior featured enough space to seat six occupants. To gain enough space for the middle occupant in the front seats the shift lever was placed under the steering wheel, rather than on the floor. The front seats could be folded down to make a large bed which could be used by up to four people. Behind the rear seats there was a firewall, second luggage compartment and another firewall - a layout used already in the T77 to bring the engine intrusion (noise level, odor, heat etc.) to minimum. The rear was characterized by a large two piece window making it the first rear-engined Tatra with good rear visibility.
The interior had independent heating.
Low volume production levels and the resulting lack of production automation meant that "one off" adaptations were relatively easy to accomplish.
Engine:
The V8 overhead valve hemi engine weighed only 180 kg (400 lb), allowing the car to have 47/53 front/rear interaxle weight distribution when fully loaded. The engine was already used in the late Tatra 87 and its extreme reliability was confirmed by previous use in the Tatra 607 race car or military light truck T805. The air-cooling system was designed to cool the most heated parts of the engine more effectively.
Further modifications led to introduction of the T603H engine, from which the T603HB (export model) and T603HT (tropical climate model) were derived.

Gearbox:
The synchronized gearbox had four speeds (+ reverse). Customers could order "mountain" gearing in place of the standard ratios. The gear stick was placed under the steering wheel in order to make room for the middle occupant of the front seats.
The gearbox made a monoblock with the shaft of the rear axle.
Suspension:
Suspension was by swing axles in the rear and MacPherson suspension in the front. Coil springs were used with hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers.
Initially a double-circuit hydraulic brake system was used, but later a single-circuit was used. All wheels had drum brakes until 1968, when they were replaced by disc brakes.
T603 in competition:
The T603s took part in 79 races (24 international) in years 1957 to 1967, resulting in a total 60 first, 56 second and 49 third positions. A contemporary advertising film showing the speed and robustness of the T603-1's handling. It's an amazing and interesting film. During the highway scene Tatra were clearly attempting to demonstrate that the problem of yaw at high speed had been addressed by putting car through a deliberate rear end sway. All the way through the film the car is roughly treated - even rolled down a hillside at the end! It's also noteworthy that the police car that gives chase in the second half of the film is a Tatraplan kombi van.   Heinkelscooter

Candice Swanepoel kam in dem südafrikanischen Ort Mooi River als Tochter einer Afrikaanssprechenden burischen Familie niederländischer Abstammung auf die Welt und wuchs in ihrem Geburtsort auf einer Milch- und Fleischfarm auf. Sie besuchte das Mädcheninternat St. Anne’s College. Im Alter von 15 Jahren wurde sie auf einem Flohmarkt in Durban von einem Modelscout entdeckt. Seit 2007 ist sie ein Victoria’s-Secret-Model und wirkt in der amerikanischen Lingerie-Modenschau Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show mit. Im Oktober 2013 trug sie dort den Royal Fantasy Bra – einen jährlich präsentierten, mit Juwelen besetzten Büstenhalter im Wert von zehn Millionen US-Dollar.

Swanepoel war auf dem Titelbild der deutschen Ausgabe von Elle (Juni 2008), der griechischen Ausgabe von Vogue (Oktober 2005), der italienischen Ausgabe der Vogue (Februar 2011) und in den USA auf dem Titel von Ocean Drive (November 2009) abgebildet. Auf dem Laufsteg war sie unter anderem für Trussardi, Diane von Fürstenberg, Dolce & Gabbana und Tommy Hilfiger aktiv.

2012 belegte sie Platz 10 auf der Forbes-Liste der bestverdienenden Models, 2013 Platz 9.

By no account could the Tatra T613 ever be described as streamlined, although with this car Tatra finally managed to address all the issues of rear end instability. Like other cars of the late 70s and 80s the T613 was boxy and uninspiring and as a consequence is not in the scope of this article.
Tatra survived the fall of Communism, manufacturing cars and trucks until 1999 when Tatra decided to concentrate solely on trucks and retired their car line. They continue to manufacture trucks today which perform strongly in endurance events like the Paris to Dakar Rally. En. text: The Tatra 613 was a large luxury rear wheel driven car with rear mounted air-cooled engine manufactured by Czechoslovak manufacturer Tatra from the 1970s to the 1990s, as a replacement for the Tatra 603 series. It featured an all-new body styled by Vignale of Italy and used a dohc air-cooled 3.5 litre V8 engine with 165 hp. Later injection versions reached 200 hp, with max. speed of 230 km/h. The design was updated a further five times until being replaced by the Tatra 700 in 1996, itself a restyled T613-5. The Tatra 613 vehicles were mostly used by government officials, industry executives and in limited numbers were also used as police cars and as the rapid response fire fighting and rescue vehicles during motorsport events.

Cz. text: Vignale (přesněji Carrozzeria Alfredo Vignale) byla italská návrhářská firma založená Alfredem Vignale v roce 1948. Alfredo Vignale (1913 – 1969) byl známý italský automobilový designér, který se mimo návrhů karosérií pro mnohé renomované automobilové firmy, věnoval i malosériové výrobě vozů pod vlastní značkou, postavených na bázi existujících vozů s vlastní nebo upravenou karosérií. Po zkušenostech ve firmě Stabilimenti Farina, vedené Giovanni Farinou, starším bratrem známého Pinin Fariny, založil v roce 1948 vlastní firmu Carrozzeria Vignalena Via Cigliano v Turíně. Firma se zpočátku věnovala návrhům nových karosérií, později Vignale otevřel nový provoz v blízkosti turínských závodů Fiat Mirafiori, kde se mimo vývojových prací a návrhů věnoval i výrobě. Činnost firmy byla založena na vysoké řemeslné zručnosti a profesionalitě pracovníků, což bylo pro malosériovou výrobu nezbytné. Vignale vyráběla a upravovala karosérie především pro vozy Fiat. Právě kvůli dobře zvládnuté technologii kusové, až malosériové výroby, jakož i kvůli estetickým kvalitám návrhů karosérií, byla firma Carrozzeria Vignale oslovena v roce 1968 automobilkou Tatra se žádostí o zpracování návrhu nového reprezentačního vozu Tatra 613 v provedení sedan a kupé, tvarově vycházejícího z některých kopřivnických návrhů. Tatra dodala do Itálie svařené a provizorně vyztužené podvozkové skupiny budoucích vozů i s motory. Po mnoha vzájemných konzultacích byly začátkem roku 1969 do Československa dodány objednané prototypy – nejprve modrý sedan, později společně černý sedan a zelené kupé. Součástí dodávky byla i náhradní karosérie.  ...

    A truly magnificent and very complete explanation of the Tatra car.
    I am so old that, when I was (3) a small (1954 years) i'm sitting Tatra back seat.
    The car was something like 1946 - 1949 model year.
    Since then, the Tatra vehicles will no longer be imported to Finland.
    In its place come Skoda and Popeda ...

    Tatra 87 was NOT Tatraplan!!! Tatra 87 was named short like "Tatra 8" too. A smaller model Tatra 600 Tatraplan with four-cylinder 2000 ccm engine only was produced from 1949 to 1952 after Tatra 87.

    The car of Mr. Hanzelka and Mr. Zikmund was true Tatra 87 alias "Tatra 8".
