Norden: This is the Bomb Sight Stabilizer. The Bomb Sight
Head mounts to the stainless steel gear and brass bushing on the upper right end
of the stabilizer. The sight head will pivot about the yaw axis on the

The Norden Mk. XV, known as the Norden M series in Army service, was a bombsight used by theUnited States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and the United States Navy during World War II, and the United States Air Force in the Korean and the Vietnam Wars. It was the canonical tachometric design, a system that allowed it to directly measure the aircraft's ground speed and direction, which older bombsights could only measure inaccurately with lengthy in-flight procedures. The Norden further improved on older designs by using an analog computer that constantly calculated the bomb's impact point based on current flight conditions, and an autopilot that let it react quickly and accurately to changes in the wind or other effects.
Together, these features allowed for unprecedented accuracy in day bombing from high altitudes; in testing the Norden demonstrated a circular error probable (CEP) of 23 metres (75 ft), an astonishing performance for the era. This accuracy allowed direct attacks on ships, factories, and other point targets. Both the Navy and the AAF saw this as a means to achieve war aims through high-altitude bombing; for instance, destroying an invasion fleet by air long before it could reach US shores. To achieve these aims, the Norden was granted the utmost secrecy well into the war, and was part of a then-unprecedented production effort on the same scale as the Manhattan Project. Carl L. Norden, Inc. ranked 46th among United States corporations in the value of World War II military production contracts.
In practice it was not possible to achieve this level of accuracy in combat conditions, with the average CEP in 1943 being 370 metres (1,200 ft). Both the Navy and Air Forces had to give up on the idea of pinpoint attacks during the war. The Navy turned to dive bombing and skip bombing to attack ships, while the Air Forces developed the lead bomber concept to improve accuracy, while adopting area bombing techniques by ever larger groups of aircraft. Nevertheless, the Norden's reputation as a pin-point device lived on, due in no small part to Norden's own advertising of the device after secrecy was reduced late in the war.
The Norden saw some use in the post-World War II era, especially during the Korean War. Post-war use was greatly reduced due to the introduction of radar-based systems, but the need for accurate daytime attacks kept it in service for some time. The last combat use of the Norden was in the US Navy's VO-67 squadron, which used them to drop sensors onto the Ho Chi Minh Trail as late as 1967. The Blonde and the Bomber: The Hair that Whipped Hitler

News that human hair, as an absorbent of oil, is being used in helping to clean the massive oil spill in the Gulf Coast comes as no surprise. From the early days of aquatic oil disasters, especially in California, hair has been used as an absorbent. What is perhaps generally unknown is the role of hair donation in affecting the outcome of World War II. The hair that defeated Hitler and Tojo is an unknown tale in the annals of American military history.
At the outset of the Second World War it was believed that strategic bombing would play a pivotal role in the conflict. The Nazis bombed London, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and Jimmy Doolittle dropped bombs on Japan. Precision daylight bombardment of strategic targets in Hitler’s Germany became a cornerstone of the Allied war plan, as did the bombing of Japan at the close of the Pacific campaign.
The Norden Bombsight:
In order to accomplish this precision bombardment the United States Army Air Corps relied on one of the most highly guarded secrets in American history, the Norden bombsight. Karl Norden, a Swedish immigrant, invented his bombsight in the mid- 1930’s. It was essentially a mechanical computer that compensated for the airspeed of the bomber, the plane’s altitude and wind velocity.
Legendary for its accuracy, the Norden bombsight was such a highly guarded secret that bombardiers were instructed to destroy the instrument at all cost if there was any danger that it might fall into enemy hands. Later versions of “the Norden” were equipped with internal explosives to facilitate self-destruction or scuttling in downed aircraft.
An initial problem with the Norden bombsight was that the Air Force required deployment in theaters of operation ranging from the African desert and Pacific jungles to the Arctic regions. Variation in temperature and humidity played havoc with the delicate crosshairs, which were essential to the efficient operation of the device. Various manmade wire configurations were attempted as was the web of black widow spiders. These materials could not withstand the range of temperatures to which bombers were exposed, nor were they reliable at altitudes in excess of 20,000 feet.
The one sustenance that was found to be reliable at high altitudes and maintained its consistency in a variety of climactic conditions was human hair. Fine blonde hair that had not been subjected to chemical treatments such as permanent waves or hot iron curling was found to be remarkably akin to black widow spider webbing albeit even more suitable for Norden bombsight application.
Hair for War:
In 1942 Mary Babnick Brown saw a War Department advertisement in a Pueblo, Colorado newspaper requesting “hair for the war effort.” The ad stipulated that the desired hair must be at least 22 inches long and that preferably it had never had a permanent wave or been heated. Mary’s hair was 32 inches long. In 36 years her hair had only been trimmed, never cut, nor was it “permed” or excessively heated. As requested in the advertisement, Mary Brown sent a sample of her locks to the War Department.
A prompt reply from the War Department was forthcoming. Mary’s hair was perfect. She found herself on the horns of a dilemma. “I saw so many people crying their eyes out, not wanting their sons to go (to war). I was sad. I wanted to do something for the war effort.” On the other hand, she would later say of her hair, “I didn’t want to give it up but it was too much trouble to take care of and I began thinking of having it cut.” In the end she had her hair cut to War Department specifications.
Mrs. Brown recalled, “After I did it I cried and cried. I went to my mother and said, ‘Mama, why did you let me cut my hair?’ It was two months before I went anywhere except to work ...and I wore a bandanna there.”
Mary Babnick Brown’s contribution to the war effort was TOP SECRET, as closely guarded as were Norden bombsights. Not until 1987 did she learn that her hair had been used for virtually every Norden bombsight produced. “I couldn’t believe it when they told me,” Mrs. Brown mused. “All I knew was that they needed virgin hair.”
In 1990 Brown was honored at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado for her contribution to the World War II effort. A plaque commemorating her contribution is displayed at the Academy’s Air Force Museum.
While the Norden bombsight has long been replaced by electronic computer devices, as recently as the Vietnam War the old warhorse bombsights were pressed once again into service in dropping transmitters along the Ho Chi Minh Trail when more modern aiming devices failed to do the job as well.
With in excess of 370,000 beauty salons in the United States, each of which is estimated to cut an average of one pound of hair per day, human hair is more abundant than most would suspect. Given this volume of human hair, it is perhaps not unreasonable to suppose that collected in sufficient quantities it might make an impact on oil saturation in the Gulf of Mexico. If so, it might well be the finest application of human hair since Mary Babnick Brown agreed to the haircut that helped defeat Hitler.

1972. My best favourite book & movie.
For me is this the best "take off" scene than any other war film has.
They used 18 original B-25's, 17 flyable. Since WW2 this was the biggest
B-25 'meeting'. Enjoy!

'Norden' Mark XV
bombsight (above' had all its controls on the right-hand side, slowing the
bombardier's adjustments, while the Sperry S-1 bombsight (below) had controls on
both sides, allowing range and course to be adjusted simultaneously. The
Norden's top section, dubbed the "football, " was removable; it contained the
vertical gyro while the azimuth gyro was housed in the stabilizer. In the Sperry
the azimuth gyro {not shown) was in a box bolted to the far side. The Sperry
bombsight was mounted on shock absorbers to prevent vibration from the plane's
engines from shaking the telescope optics; the Norden was not.
