The 1956 Revolution:

The same people who survived the siege of  Budapest in 1944/45 were faced with another Soviet Siege in 1956. At that time there was a nationwide revolt against the Communist government of Hungary which grew into an armed rebellion,  In response, the Soviets staged another massive attack on Budapest with tanks, artillery, air strikes, and infantry, crushing the Hungarian resistance in two weeks, and leaving Budapest in ruins again. Every October 23rd today's Hungarians celebrate their 1956 stand against the Russians.

A második világháborúban tervezett harckocsik egyre vastagabb páncélzattal, egyre nagyobb tűzerejű fegyverzettel és egyre nagyobb teljesítményű motorokkal kerültek gyártásra. A fejlesztések kulcsiránya a lehető legegyszerűbb szerkezeti felépítés lett, amely a hatékony tömeggyártás alapvető kívánalma. Ennek a folyamatnak az eredményeként a háború második felében megjelent nagy űrmérethosszú, 75 és 88 mm-es harckocsiágyúkkal felszerelt Pz.Kpf.W.: Panzer V Panther, a Panzer VI "Tiger" és a "Tiger II" német közepes és nehéz harckocsik, az 1945 februárjában bevetett, 90 mm-es ágyúval szerelt amerikai M26 "Pershing", a brit fejlesztésű, 17 fontos ágyúval szerelt "Sherman Firefly" és az A34 "Comet", vagy a szovjet Kliment Vorosilov marsall - KV-alvázakon létrehozott Joszif Sztálin-sorozat: (JS) ISz–1, ISz–2, ISz–3 típusú nehéz harckocsik. Ezen harckocsik némelyike később is résztvevője volt fegyveres összecsapásoknak, de az 1960-as évekre eltüntek a hadrendből.
A világháború lehetőséget nyújtott a harckocsi tervezők számára a legkülönbözőbb harckocsi típusok tervezésére és kipróbálására. A háború végére azonban kialakult egy klasszikus, egytornyos, löveggel felszerelt, alap harckocsi forma, ami a mai napig meghatározta a páncélosok kifejlesztését. A folyamatos tesztelés bebizonyította, hogy a több körbeforgó toronnyal felszerelt és az óriás harckocsik konstrukciója, mint a szovjet T–100-as vagy a német "Maus" ("Egér") harckocsi nem életképesek, ezért ezeket a tervezők viszonylag hamar elvetették.
A európai háború befejezése után a megszálló szövetséges hatalmak közötti viszony ellenséges viszonyba csapott át, melynek fő oka a teljes közép-európai térség megszállására törekvő Szovjetunió mennyiségi katonai fölénye által támasztott fenyegetés volt. A nyugati hatalmak elsőként az 1945-ös berlini győzelmi felvonuláson szembesülhettek a szovjet tüzérségi és harckocsierők fejlettségével és mennyiségével.[13] A Sztálinról elnevezett ISz–2 és ISz–3 nehéz harckocsikat 122 mm űrméretű, BL-9 jelzésű, 217 mm páncél átütésére képes harckocsiágyúkkal szerelték fel. Az ISz–3 tömege 46 tonna volt, kialakítása tükrözte a kor magas mérnöki színvonalát: lapos, lencse alakú öntött acéltornya és döntött páncéllemezek biztosították a jó ballisztikai védelmet, melyek vastagsága egyes helyeken elérte 160 mm-t. Utolsó nehézharckocsi-projektjük a ISz–3-ból továbbfejlesztett ISz–10, későbbi nevén T–10 volt, melyet 1966-ban megszüntettek.

В боевых действиях Второй мировой войны не применялся, однако 52 танка ИС-3 приняли участие в Берлинском параде союзных войск в честь Победы 7 сентября 1945 года. The IS tank family (IS in Cyrillic "ИС", meaning the Joseph Stalin or Iosif Stalin in Cyrillic "Ио́сиф Ста́лин") was a series of heavy tanks developed as a successor to the KV-series by the Soviet Union during World War II. It was named after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. The heavy tank was designed with thick armour to counter the German 88 mm guns, and carried a main gun that was capable of defeating the German Tiger and Panther tanks. It was mainly a breakthrough tank, firing a heavy high-explosive shell that was useful against entrenchments and bunkers. The IS-2 was put into service in April 1944, and was used as a spearhead in the Battle of Berlin by the Red Army in the final stage of the war.

IS-3

There are two tanks known as IS-3. IS-3 (Objekt 244) was an IS-2 rearmed with the long-barrelled 85mm cannon (D-5T-85-BM). It was developed by LKZ (in Leningrad) and was not taken in service. IS-3 (Object 703) was developed in late 1944 by ChTZ (in Chelyabinsk) and left the factory shop in May 1945. This tank had an improved armour layout, and a semi-hemispherical cast turret (resembling an overturned soup bowl) which became the hallmark of post-war Soviet tanks. While this low, hemispherical turret may have improved protection, it also significantly diminished the working headroom, especially for the loader (Soviet tanks in general are characterized by uncomfortably small interior space compared to Western tanks; however, this was addressed by Soviet recruitment criteria, which classified recruits' eligibility by numerous parameters, and specified that only very short men be drafted to serve in tank crews). The low turret also limited the maximum depression of the main gun, since the gun breech had little room inside the turret to pivot on its horizontal axis. As a result, the IS-3 was less able to take advantage of hull-down positions than Western tanks. The IS-3's pointed prow earned it the nickname Shchuka (Pike) by its crews. It weighed slightly less and stood 30 centimetres (12 in) lower than previous versions. Wartime production resulted in many mechanical problems and a hull weldline that had a tendency to crack open.
The first public demonstration of the IS-3 came on 7 September 1945 during the Allied victory parade on Charlottenburgerstrasse in Berlin with the heavily reinforced 71st Guards Heavy Tank Regiment of the 2nd Guards Tank Army. The IS-3 came too late to see action in World War II.
Starting in 1960, the IS-3 was slightly modernized as the IS-3M, in a manner similar to the IS-2M.

A szovjet KV-1 tankok gyártását 1942-től nem folytatták, mert a harckocsi tűzereje már nem volt elégséges. Egy Leningrád környéki harcban az addig egészen jól teljesítő KV-1 összetalálkozott az új fejlesztésű német Tigrissel. Az eredmény az volt, hogy 10 darab KV-1-es füstölögve maradt ott a harcmezőn. Tudomásul kellett venni, hogy ez a típus elavult, de ettől az alváz még hasznosítható volt. Lekövetve a német megoldást, raktak rá egy löveget. Egy nagy löveget. Egy 152 mm-eset. Ez volt a SZU-1521942. december 31n kezdték az eszköz fejlesztését. Fő fegyverzetnek egy 152 mm-es ML-20S löveget választottak ki. A tesztelés mondhatni empírikus volt: abból állt, hogy szereztek egy sérült Tigrist és azon próbálták ki az új löveget. Как только в конце 1943 года появился на вооружении тяжелый танк ИС-1, на его базе решили создать полнстью бронированную самоходную установку. Поначалу это встретило некоторые трудности, ведь ИС-1 имел корпус меньшей ширины, чем КВ-1С, на базе которого в 1943 году была создана тяжелая самоходная установка СУ-152 со 152-мм гаубицей-пушкой. Однако усилия конструкторов Челябинского Кировского завода и артиллеристов под руководством Ф.Ф. Петрова увенчались успехом. Уже до конца 1943 года было выпущено 35 самоходок, на шасси ИС-1 вооруженных 152-мм гаубицей-пушкой.

One of the artifacts the FHC recently obtained is a Scud ballistic missile carrier called a TEL. About 100 8U218 TELs (Tractor, Erector and Launcher) were built from a self-propelled gun design that dates back to World War II. Designated the ISU-152, the machine carried a 152.4 mm howitzer, used to fight tanks or support infantry. TEL versions of the vehicle had the same running gear but omitted the heavy gun to carry a single 9,700-pound R-11 ballistic Scud, its launch tower, and missile support equipment. The first of the "Scud" series, designated R-11 (SS-1B Scud-A) originated in a 1951 requirement for a ballistic missile with similar performance to the German V-2 rocket. The R-11 was developed by engineer Victor Makeev, who was then working in the OKB-1, headed by Sergey Korolev. It first flew on 18 April 1953, was fitted with an Isayev engine using kerosene and nitric acid as propellant. On 13 December 1953, a production order was passed with SKB-385 in Zlatoust, a factory dedicated to producing long-range rockets. In June 1955, Makeev was appointed chief designer of the SKB-385 to oversee the program and, in July, the R-11 was formally accepted into military service. The definitive R-11M, designed to carry a nuclear warhead, was accepted officially into service on 1 April 1958. The launch system received the GRAU designation 8K11.
The R-11M had a maximum range of 270 km, but when carrying a nuclear warhead, this was reduced to 150 km. Its purpose was strictly as a mobile nuclear strike vector, giving the Soviet Army the ability to hit European targets from forward areas, armed with a nuclear warhead with an estimated yield of 50 kilotons.
A naval variant, the R-11FM (SS-N-1 Scud-A) was first tested in February 1955, and was first launched from a converted Project 611 (Zulu class) submarine in September of the same year. While the initial design was done by Korolev's OKB-1, the program was transferred to Makeev's SKB-385 in August 1955. It became operational in 1959 and was deployed onboard Project 611 and Project 629 (Golf Class) submarines. During its service, 77 launches were conducted, of which 59 were successful.

Az R–11 (NATO-kódja: SS–1A, GRAU-kódja: 8A61) és az R–11M (NATO-kódja: SS–1B Scud A, GRAU-kódja: 8K11) szovjet harcászati-hadműveleti ballisztikus rakéta, melyet az 1950-es évek második felére fejlesztettek ki Viktor Makejev vezetésével az OKB–1 tervezőirodában, nagyrészt a zsákmányolt második világháborús német ballisztikus rakétákra (mindenekelőtt a V–2-re) alapozva. Az egyszerű felépítésű, egyfokozatú, folyékony hajtóanyagú rakéta hagyományos- vagy atomtöltetet hordozhatott. Szállító és Indító járműve az ISZU–152 rohamlővegen alapuló 8U218 lánctalpas harcjármű.
A világ számos országába exportálták. Sok helyen gyártották is, több országban ezen rakéta (gyakran illegális) gyártása és továbbfejlesztése teremtette meg az alapot az önálló rakétagyártáshoz. Észak-Koreában és Iránban is gyártják. Irak az irak-iráni háborúban és az öbölháborúban tömegesen vetette be a rakétákat, melyek hatótávolságát helyben megnövelték.
A rakéta előkészítése az indításra sok időt vesz igénybe, pontatlan, emiatt csak tömegpusztító fejrésszel lenne alkalmazható hatásosan, a Szovjetunióban a TR–1 Temp és az R–400 Oka rakéták váltották le. Derivato dagli studi tedeschi effettuati durante la seconda guerra mondiale, il missile SS-1 Scud, nelle sue varie versioni, è il più diffuso e famoso ordigno balistico tattico a livello mondiale da circa 45 anni. Se il missile deve un tributo ai progettisti tedeschi di natura assolutamente fondamentale, la definizione di V2 moderna che gli viene spesso attribuita è in realtà inadeguata a descrivere le capacità di tale ordigno e il progresso che esso ha rappresentato rispetto al missile tedesco. È entrato in servizio nel 1961.

В тусклом свете заполярного дня по заснеженной тундре пунктирной линией ползет колонна гусеничного транспорта: бронетранспортеры охраны, вездеходы с персоналом, цистерны с топливом и… четыре загадочные машины внушительных размеров, похожие на могучие железные гробы. Наверное, так или почти так выглядело бы путешествие мобильной атомной электростанции к Н-скому военному объекту, который стережет страну от вероятного противника в самом сердце ледяной пустыни…
Корни этой истории уходят, разумеется, в эпоху атомной романтики – в середину 1950-х. В 1955 году Ефим Павлович Славский – один из корифеев атомной промышленности СССР, будущий глава Минсредмаша, прослуживший на этом посту от Никиты Сергеевича до Михаила Сергеевича, – посетил ленинградский Кировский завод. Именно в беседе с директором ЛКЗ И.М. Синевым впервые прозвучало предложение о разработке мобильной атомной электростанции, которая могла бы питать электроэнергией гражданские и военные объекты, расположенные в отдаленных районах Крайнего Севера и Сибири.

The TES-3, the Soviets' Transportable Electric Station was designed in the USSR in the mid-1950s and is quite literally a mammoth, mobile nuclear power plant. At 310 tons with over 37 pounds of uranium on board, this nine-wheeled Soviet goliath was designed to haul nuclear power everywhere, that and the possibility of a Chernobyl-like disaster. The TES-3 never made it past the prototype phase, but not for lack of awesomeness or bounty of danger, but because it wasn't quite profitable.
